Happy Anniversary, Mommie!
My First Day in LA
So, yeah. I moved to Los Angeles this past Monday. And it feels so good to be here.
For those who have asked why California or what’s out here for me, here’s the thing. This has been in the works for a while now but the timing just wasn’t right. I tell all of my friends now that timing is everything and that you absolutely must trust it. Listen, you absolutely must trust it. I can’t stress that enough. TRUST THE TIMING. You get the picture. But I digress.
I thought about writing this wonderfully long blog post today about my move but I decided to chronicle my journey in a more private, confidential way. That way, I will be more intentional with my thoughts and things that I share with the world. Don’t worry, though, because you will still get goodies and updates from me before the final project is complete. But not all at once.
As I sit and reflect on my first full day here, I sit in awe. I went to the ocean and ran my toes through the sand, I went to Hollywood (the city) and got commissioned to write a screenplay (by a former child star — my first day here!) and saw a guy strip completely down to nothing (he literally took all his clothes off — underwear and socks included — he was COMPLETELY naked) in the middle of the street. If that was just my first day, I can only imagine what the first year will look like and I must say that I am so ready for it.
So, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride as we go Faithbound on Trails of the Road less Traveled.
Dope the Movie
Yesterday I had the pleasure of going to a private screening of the film, DOPE, which opens in theaters everywhere in two weeks on June 19th. If you haven’t heard by now, for so many reasons, the movie is… well, dope.
No, seriously. Here’s the concept: High-school senior Malcolm (Atlanta Native Shameik Moore) and his friends Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) bond over ’90s hip-hop culture, their studies and playing music in their own punk band, Awreeoh (pronounced: Oreo). A chance encounter with a drug dealer named Dom lands Malcolm and company at the dealer’s nightclub birthday party; when the scene turns violent, they flee — with the Ecstasy that Dom secretly hid in Malcolm’s backpack. A wild adventure ensues as the youths try to evade armed thugs who want the stash.
As you can probably tell, there’s some action driven comedy and drama involved. While that’s accurate in regards to how the story is told, you will realize there are so many universal truths in this flick. I won’t begin to call them out as I don’t want to spoil any part of it, but what I will say is that it speaks LOUD and CLEAR to the current happenings in the world in regards to race relations — on every level — black and white, black and black, white and white and everything in between. It’s the perfect film for me as it brought back so many memories from the 90s and it’s also the perfect film for the next generation as many popular phrases and cultural phenomenons pop up throughout the film. It is Rated R so I definitely advise parents to be mindful of this before signing your “child” up to go or before making this the center of family night on June 19th, though parents nowadays don’t have a clue what their child is doing or watching or don’t even actually care but… I digress.
I must admit I’m a tad bit bias as this film was written and directed by the very man who wrote and directed the film that gave me the desire to tell stories, Rick Famuyiwa. While his 1999 classic The Wood (currently on Netflix) is my all-time go-to film for inspiration (and again, the movie that made me want to become a screenwriter), DOPE is a film that will inspire another young creative, another young geek, another young dude in the hood to ‘Git Up, Git Out‘ and get something.
The film is produced by Forest Whitaker, Pharrell Willams (all original music) and Sean Combs and stars the stunning Zoë Kravitz (Lenny and Lisa’s daughter), A$AP Rocky, Kimberly Elise, Tyga, Quincy Brown, Keith Stanfield, Roger Guenvuer Smith, Chanel Iman, Rick Fox and includes the perfect cameo by De’aundre Bonds who revived his character role (Stacey) from The Wood.
If you’re looking for something fresh, something fun, something filled with hip hop, pop rock and hi-top fades, DOPE is the film of the summer for you.
Below is the Red Band Trailer for DOPE, which opens in theaters nationwide, Friday, JUNE 19th. Visit YouAreDope.com for the official trailer and more information.
